Surprisingly, Uncle Iroh is one of the characters who returns in the sequel series The Legend of Korra , which reveals that he never exactly died, but instead moved on to a different plane of existence.
However, any ambitions that Iroh had for power died along with his son, Lu Ten, who was killed on the front lines during Iroh's six hundred-day siege of the Earth Kingdom city of Ba Sing Se.
After Iroh's brother, Ozai , became Fire Lord and banished his own son from the Fire Nation, Iroh became a surrogate father to Zuko - always trying to calm his impulses towards anger and violence. Both Zuko and Aang dislike the concoction, and Iroh laments that is " a man ahead of my time.
Iroh returns in The Legend of Korra season 2 , when Aang's successor as the Avatar, Korra, gets lost in the spirit world and reverts to the form of a frightened little girl. Iroh's age can be inferred with the understanding that his younger brother, Fire Lord Ozai, is Since the Air Nomad genocide lead by Fire Lord Sozin took place in 0 AG and he died at , one can extrapolate Iroh's age by the values Sozin placed on practical knowledge.
Considering that the former Fire Lord valued his wisdom over Ozai, it can be extrapolated that he's somewhere between 55 and 63, old enough to be considered seasoned though young enough to have a meaningful rule. Given that Korra's Iroh is the grandson of Prince Zuko, it's reasonable to assume that the young man and his inspired patron may share more things in common than simply their names.
Additionally, it is also speculated that Lu Ten's visage is borrowed from Mako Iwamatsu, Iroh's first English voice actor. This is especially poignant when the character mourns for his son, as the actor is simultaneously lamenting the loss of his youth.
It adds another dimension to an already powerful song. It may seem blasphemous to insinuate that Uncle Iroh may have flaws, though his actions speak louder than his endearing musings ever might. When Zuko and Iroh were hosted by a kindly Earth Kingdom family and the Fire Prince was ready to go, he stole their beast to use as his own.
Iroh chastised him for his immorality despite the fact that he has stolen too. When Zuko and his uncle tracked down Aang to a perfume maker's courtyard, he absconded with some of their finest wares, looking over his shoulder to ensure he wasn't caught. Iroh discovered a technique imperative to his later ventures against the Fire Nation; he learned how to deflect lightning against its caster.
While this skill may in part necessitate being a firebender to manipulate the lightning in the same way one might shoot it , the movements it involves are much different. The undulating upper body motions and fluidity of arms are borrowed from waterbender stances and techniques.
By combining their arts with his, he is able to go against some of the strongest threats to the entire world and has saved the life of Zuko through his teaching.
Iroh did not go against Ozai or Azula because he feared their power overshadowed his, he fought alongside the Lotus to liberate Ba Sing Se because those battles were the destinies of Aang and Zuko respectively. He has stated that should he have intervened, it would have denied them essential growth.
Mako- san succumbed to esophageal cancer as production on Season 2 was winding down, but luckily, Greg Baldwin took up Iroh's character. Incidentally, Iroh's story in The Tales of Ba Sing Se concludes with a message "in honor of Mako" during the scene where he cries before his dead son's portrait. He also just happens to work with Zuko, his Troubled, but Cute Anti-Villain nephew although Iroh is never seen doing anything particularly evil , and he never really helps Zuko make any major progress toward capturing the Avatar.
And he's also a prominent figure of the Order of the White Lotus. In one flashback , he's seen writing a kind letter to his family in the Fire Nation while leading a brutal siege against Ba Sing Se in the letter, he even casually jokes about the possibility of burning the city to the ground. All-Loving Hero : Even moreso than Aang, as he actively befriends anybody he meets, sometimes going out of his way to give them advice and an understanding ear to listen to their problems.
If he does participate in violence, he shows mercy and compassion, even though he is one of the greatest benders in the entire world. The main exceptions to his love are Ozai and Azula, who are extremely toxic and dangerous, and cannot be reasoned with. Iroh's a gentle soul, but he's no fool. Always Someone Better : Part of Ozai's motivation clearly stems from a resentment towards Iroh's superiority over him in their father's eyes. In all flashbacks before Azulon's death, Iroh is leading the majority of the Fire Nation's forces to battle while Ozai simmers in rage at the palace doing nothing in particular.
And Then What? Anger Born of Worry : It takes a lot to get under Iroh's skin, but he absolutely loses it when Zuko is once again planning on going on a reckless mission. This jolly old man is generally very patient, but he is extremely afraid of his nephew getting himself killed due to not thinking things through, and it manifests as one of the very few moments where he raises his voice.
Iroh has already lost one son, he's not losing Zuko. Anti-Villain : He has no malicious plans of any sort and is mostly concerned with helping Zuko.
The only reason you can even call him a villain is by association. But the loss of his only son changed him. Now, he wishes to help bring back harmony in the world. Badass Beard : A standard Fire Nation beard and easily one of the most badass characters in the show, by miles.
