Cons everything. Its amazing how the different parts of the place work together my favorite plant is the ingot plant where they melt all the scraps down from the airplane wings and fire truck aluminum to reuse it. Pros Great pay, short breaks, awesome benefits. When I was there I rarely had time for myself. I was constantly having to work the weekends and I had a very overbearing boss.
It wasn't all bad, there is a lot of metallurgists so if you have a question you can easily get an answer. Pros Experienced company with many metallurgists. Cons High turnover. Money is really good if you want to work overtime. Management communication is terrible. Planning of work is also terrible. Pros Good money, overtime always available if wanted.
Cons Poorly managed. Been contracting with Alcoa for 3 years and over half of our team are contractors. Contractors do not receive accommodations or flexibility as other members of the team do due to being a contractor. We are technically not allowed to work from home, receive no flexibility with our schedules, receive very little PTO time and the list goes on.
It is a very good company to work for but getting in as a permanent employee is the way to go. If you start out as a contractor, you will almost never be switched to perm. Pros Steady work, good work life balance. Cons No flexibility or accommodations for contractors. Jobs at Alcoa. Smelter Process Control Operator.
Smelter Process Engineer. Smelter General Mechanic. Power Electrician. Alcoa was a horrible place to work. Management were buddy buddy with some people and treated the others bad. If dragline went down all mechanics were required to work. Pros Insurance. Cons Never at home. Lots of overtime. Have to work lots of hours of overtime to make a decent wage. No background checks done during hiring process so they will hire just about anybody.
High turnover rate. Bad Union and dues would always get increased. Pros Good work force. Cons Old dirty break rooms. Good pay and benefits ,job security based on seniority. Pros Company Apprenticeship Program. Traffic control positions are hired out through a union so the pay is good.
If your in good with management treatment is good, if not expect bottom of the barrel jobs. Not the good hours or overtime shifts. I enjoyed working with nearly everyone there and met some great people.
The is very good and got plenty of hours. I started on 3rd shift and had to learn to get adjusted to it. I was laid off and when I was called back , I was put on 2nd shift. I loved it since I'm not much of a morning person. I eventually was put on a weekend shift and although the pay was great , the weekend shift eventually became the deal breaker for me as become less and less desirable. Pros pay and great people.
Cons I was moved around alot and put on different shifts. Overall the pay was pretty good and competitive with other companies. Environment was not the best and a lot if inner office turmoil happened while I worked there. Imagine standing in front of lava and trying to pick out rocks that weigh anywhere from pounds. Yes the company says not to pick up anything bigger than your hard hat, but you will. The job was designed to be done in less than 6 hours to give you a long break to look forward to.
Pros Pay and time off. Cons Physically demanding, Hot, Longevity of work. The best job to have is in the Union where protection is available. Show detailed source information?
